Description
What is Metronidazole?
Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication. It is mainly used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria — organisms that thrive without oxygen and are often responsible for dental infections. It also helps reduce gum inflammation, pain, and discomfort linked to infection.
Dental Infections Treated with Metronidazole
- Dental abscesses – bacterial infections inside the tooth
- Periodontitis – serious gum infection causing bleeding, soreness, and gum damage
- Post-dental procedure infections (after extractions or root canals)
- Infected wisdom teeth
How does Metronidazole work?
Metronidazole attacks and destroys bacteria responsible for infection by interfering with their DNA, preventing them from repairing and multiplying. This leads to the bacteria dying off, allowing the body to heal more effectively.
Who can use Metronidazole?
- Adults and children over 12 years old
- Patients with a confirmed bacterial infection
- Individuals prescribed the medication by a dentist or healthcare professional
Dosage
For dental infections, the usual dosage is 200mg to 400mg taken three times a day, depending on severity, usually prescribed for 3 to 7 days. Take with water after food at evenly spaced intervals. Avoid alcohol while taking Metronidazole.
