Description
What is Emla Cream?
Emla cream is a topical numbing treatment made from a blend of two local anaesthetics (lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5%). It has gained attention as a short-term option for managing premature ejaculation. When applied to the penis before sex, it reduces sensitivity in the area, helping some men delay ejaculation.
How Emla Cream Works
Both active ingredients are local anaesthetics that work by blocking nerve signals in the skin. Once applied, they temporarily dull sensation in the treated area, which can help decrease overstimulation and may delay ejaculation.
How to Use Emla for Premature Ejaculation
- Wash and thoroughly dry the genital area
- Apply a small amount (pea-sized, roughly 0.5g–1g) to the underside of the penis head and shaft
- Allow it to absorb for 10–20 minutes before sexual activity
- Before intercourse, gently wipe off any excess cream to reduce risk of transfer to partner
- Begin with the lowest effective amount
Who Should Avoid Emla?
- Allergy to lidocaine, prilocaine, or other local anaesthetics
- Irritated, broken, or inflamed skin in the genital area
- Certain blood conditions such as methemoglobinemia
