Description
What is Valtrex?
Valtrex contains the active ingredient valaciclovir, an antiviral medicine used to treat infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is commonly prescribed for herpes infections of the skin and genital herpes, and can also help reduce the chance of future outbreaks.
How is Valtrex Taken?
Treating Herpes Outbreaks
- Standard dose: 500mg twice daily
- First episode: usually for 5 days (up to 10 days if advised)
- Repeat outbreaks: typically 3–5 days
Preventing Recurring Outbreaks (Suppressive Therapy)
- Usual dose: 250mg twice daily
- For frequent outbreaks: 500mg once daily may be preferred
- Can reduce outbreaks by around 70–80%
Reducing Transmission Risk
Valtrex works best when started as soon as symptoms appear. Even without visible sores, the virus can be passed on — use condoms consistently and avoid sexual contact during active outbreaks.
