Description
What is Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is part of the penicillin group of antibiotics, containing amoxicillin trihydrate. This is often prescribed to treat many types of bacterial infections, including dental infections or even chest infection. Amoxicillin may be prescribed for dental issues if there are signs of a bacterial infection, such as a tooth abscess.
How does Amoxicillin work?
Amoxicillin works by stopping the way bacteria build its protective cell walls, effectively by stopping it from surviving. This then allows the body to naturally deal with the infection using your immune system.
Who can take Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is generally suitable for most adults, teenagers, and children who are able to swallow tablets safely. However, it is not always recommended for everyone. Our clinicians will carry out and assessment before prescribing antibiotics to ensure these are suitable for you.
Amoxicillin for Dental Infections
Amoxicillin can be prescribed for certain types of bacterial dental infections such as tooth abscess and infections following dental treatment. Antibiotics are not often prescribed for dental pain or swelling, therefore, further dental treatment may be required to treat the underlying issue.
Dosage
For adults, the usual dose is 500mg, three times a day, however, this does depend on your individual circumstances. If amoxicillin has been prescribed to you, you will need to take it exactly as prescribed and complete the course, even if you feel better. Stopping the treatment without consulting with a healthcare professional could mean the infection is not fully treated.
Side Effects
- Feeling sick (nausea)
- Diarrhoea
- Mild stomach pain or discomfort

- Skin rash
Important
If you notice any unusual or concerning reactions, stop taking the medicine and seek advice from a healthcare professional straight away.
